Drive Safely
Who is Yuki onna?
"Yuki onna” (雪女) translates to "Snow Woman," referring to a spirit or yokai from Japanese folklore who appears during snowstorms. She represents the dual nature of winter—its serene beauty and its deadly power.
Niseko is blessed with some of the deepest snow in the world, a gift that keeps on giving all winter long. All of this white gold does bring risks as well, especially for driving and road safety. Simply speaking, it is hard to see with snow caked on your mirrors and the windows, and difficult to stop quickly! So take it slow, give yourself ample distance from the next car or pedestrians, and don't speed.
When walking try to stay on the sidewalk. Not only does this keep stress levels down, but it is also keeps you safe. Even if the person driving sees you (questionable in winter!!), they might not be able to stop in time!
And lastly, do not ski or snowboard down the road. Not only is it incredibly dangerous, but it is an insult to those beautiful boards!
The law in Japan about drinking and driving is clear cut - there is zero tolerance, which means that even one drink is too many. Always appoint a designated driver, or take a taxi.
